'Second Screen' Grachten Tour

Entertaining, informative, fun and.....you can SEE how it used to be!

What did Leeuwarden look like in the past? Much has been preserved but a lot has also been demolished and lost. It is precisely because a lot can no longer be seen that we have developed the 'Second Screen Grachten Toer'.

What is praam sailing?

A praam is a flat-bottomed vessel mostly used by farmers.

The praam (with the Aak) is among the oldest ship types known, occurring as early as Roman times. Sometimes the word praam is used negatively to refer to a simple type of boat.

Farmers used to have their land in places that were best accessible by water. Especially the central and south-western parts of Friesland were water-rich, and the road system then was not as extensive as now. Most farmers were ‘komelkers’. They had a few cows and some land, which was often scattered and far apart. Tools, cattle, hay, grass, manure, and so on had to be transported by water.
