Farmers used to have their land in places that were best accessible by water. Especially the central and south-western parts of Friesland were water-rich, and the road system then was not as extensive as now. Most farmers were ‘komelkers’. They had a few cows and some land, which was often scattered and far apart. Tools, cattle, hay, grass, manure, and so on had to be transported by water.
Very interesting and with great explanations
The trip was very interesting and with good explanations based on beautiful images on a television screen by the guide. The boatman steered his pram very deftly through the many narrow pipes/bridges. An excellent way to get to know and discover Leeuwarden.
A magnificent experience
Seeing Leeuwarden from the praam, a wonderful experience! We were welcomed hospitably on the praam and fascinatingly told about the sights during the cruise. Instructive, engaging, fun and relaxing!
What a fun and learning experience
The people are very friendly. We took the route ‘The 8 of Leeuwarden’ and this really comes highly recommended. How much you get to know about the city and its buildings. After this trip you look at the city very differently. Our children aged 11, 9 and 6 really enjoyed it.
