Volunteer to be taken back through Leeuwarden's city canals listening to stories and trivia about then and now. The canal cruise starts and ends at the former Special Penal Prison in the city centre. A striking building with a centuries-old, eventful history.

The guide of the Blokhuispoort tells vividly about the ‘former inmates’. Their crimes, their lives behind bars, their hardships and escapes, but also about miscarriages of justice. The guide takes you to places you are not normally allowed to go.

We will take you on a one-and-a-half-hour tour of all of Leeuwarder's city canals.  Our guides will not spend an hour and a half droning out a memorised text, but will also respond to any questions or comments you may have.

Conviviality and interaction are very important to us.  The guide will take you through photos that we show on a TV screen, giving an idea of how the city has changed over time. The photos have been selected in cooperation with HCL, Historical Centre Leeuwarden.
